Draping

Dress Form

When draping to create a costume, fabric is placed on the dress form and darts are created in order to fit the body more precisely. These darts can be pinned and marked.

Once the entire garment is drafted it is removed from the dress form and traced on paper. Seam allowance is added to the edges so it can be sewn together and the darts are marked. Each piece is marked with a name and where it goes on the body. (Front, Side, Back) An arrow is drawn to indicate the grain line of the fabric so one knows how it should be placed on the fabric for cutting. It is then used to cut the fabric. In most cases this is done on muslin and sewn together in order to check to see if everything lines up properly. This muslin is called a "Mockup". Changes are made to the mockup and adjustments to the pattern, Then it's ready for the "Fashion Fabric".

The dress form is one of the easiest ways to create a costume for an actor. A pattern can be made draping fabric onto the dress form in pieces that will be sewn together when assembled. A pattern is made from these draped pieces of fabric and seam allowance is added. The dress forms come in standard sizes and can be selected when using the costume                 measurement sheet.
